Catch and Release

fishing21 300x240 Catch and ReleaseTravis and I spent last weekend in Fergus Falls.  It is our way to get out of the busy life of the metro area.  It has also been awhile since we last visited Grandpa and Grandma in the farm.  And both of us missed Grandma’s cooking. We expected to see more family last weekend.  And sure enough, Travis’ uncles and their families were there.  They are even new faces as some of them brought friends along to camp.  We did not put up our tent and decided to sleep in the camper.  We went tubing since the weather was just perfect for it and of course, we went fishing.

Instead of keeping our catch and cooking it, Travis and I decided to simply catch and release.  Fishing has become popular and it lead to the problem of having too many people and too few fish.  In some places, catch and release fishing has been implemented.  So why catch and release?  Catch and release offers a way of prolonging the fishing trip after you have reached the reasonable or legal catch limit.  So it helps you make the most out of your trip.  Secondly, several studies show that as anglers get expertise on a particular fishery or fishing method, they develop and interest in “limiting their kill instead of killing their limit”.

But pesonally, catch and release gave me a bond with nature.  I no longer feel like a predator in the food chain.  I am not scared of the fishes anymore.  I managed to get most of my catch off the hook and putting them back to the water.  And most of all, I felt less guilty.  I have also noticed (or it could just be a coincidence) that the fishes are not afraid to bite knowing I’d release them afterwards.  My fishing experience this time was bountiful!

Catch and release needs to be done carefully and properly.  If not done the right way, the objective of putting back a live fish to its habitat will be futile.   The mortality of the fish that is being released is primarily because of stress and wounding.  Below is a bullet summary of best practices and techniques of Catch and Release:

  • fishing1 300x240 Catch and ReleaseHandle fish as little as possible and with wet hands.  Handling a fish with bare hands will remove its mucous layer that protects it from diseases.
  • If a net is necessary to take the fish out of the water, use a knotless net as possible.  This will minimize the wounding of the fish in case it fights back.
  • It is okay to take the fish briefly out of the water to take the hook off, measure, weigh or even to take picture and return it safely back to the water.
  • If a fish must be lifted from the water, support its weight horizontally.
  • If a hook is deep in a fish’s throat or stomach, cut the line as close as possible to the hook – the hook will eventually dissolve inside the fish.
  • If a fish is exhausted, revive it before releasing it by passing water over its gills – move it forward in the water with its mouth open.
  • Gently release a fish head first into the water.
  • Never hold a fish by its gill cover.
  • Never put your hands or fingers in a fish’s gills or eyes.
  • Avoid lifting a fish from the water by the line.

Catch and release fishing is all about preserving the fishing sport.  When we take the time to learn how to handle the fish safely and release it unharmed, we ensure that others will enjoy this hobby in the future.  I will definitely have more enjoyable fishing experiences to come as me and others practice catch and release.

    hello Anne!

it’s not really that difficult. you just have to be conscious of what you’re doing. when i first handled a fish, mahadlok pa man gihapon ko so for sure the fish that i first handled was in so much stress. hopefully di to siya mamatay. if you do plan to catch and release, just let your hubby to handle the fish. basta go on and fish lang jud.

    hello Mami Chris!

i really enjoyed doing it. i in fact prefer fishing than tubing. we fished after dinner last saturday until naabtan nami ug gabii. if therewe were no mosquitoes, we would’ve stayed much longer coz the fishes just bite on every cast.

i saw the pictures. waaaah! maka-ingon jud ko mami, no wonder wa ko kabiktima ug kiki pagcollege. hehehe! dagway nako sus mauwaw ko!

Yes, like you I enjoy fishing even though at first i thought they are crazy…. they’d go fishing and just release the fish they caught. Dean taught me how to catch and release. Although it’s against my will, I have to release the fish I caught. I can’t do anything, he will not allow me to bring the fish at home because of that fishy smell.

Sa sunod unya namong fishing dad-on na gyud naku sa balay akong kuha para sud-anon.hehehehe unsa ka salbahis.:d

    hello Madon!

so, i bet you’re an expert already in catch and release because you always go fishing there. of course there are times that it’s also nice to bring the fish we caught and cook it at home once in a while. i haven’t turned into a vegetarian yet so i will definitely cook one next time. not to mention i also miss eating the simple fried fish. yummy!

Grandpa and most of my uncles love to fish but they don’t eat fish. Travis likes to eat fish too but he hates cleaning it. I don’t mind cleaning the fish but not when it’s still alive, fighting back or breathing. I am not that cruel to open the guts while it’s still alive. Poor fishy!!!

sakto jud lods. if it’s a good size fish and you’re willing to clean it, keep it! last weekend, Travis and I were just too lazy to clean and cook it. so we practiced Catch and Release. besides, we are still far from reaching our limit this fishing season.

HI Jacy, my family loves to fish especially my husband, unfortunately, I am not that enthusiastic about it..I guess, because I always look after the little children when we go out, that I never had a chance to fish by myself. It sounds fun also, catch and release (sounds like a movie, Jennifer Gardner)
Thanks for coming to my site, and I hope to see you again..Have a good day..Liz

    hello Liz!

thanks for dropping by. expect me to stalk your site every now and then. I didn’t expect I would enjoy fishing at first. After my first catch and more, I am starting to love. Right, catch and release was a movie. I kinda liked that movie too.

    Have a good day!
