New Year Superstitions

January2

New Year Superstitions Happy New Year everyone!  We welcome the year 2009 with such great joy and hope.  It has been a tough 2008 for some of us.  Looking back, the previous year has brought us in economic recession, foreclosures, bailouts and rising gas prices.  Will 2009 be a better year for us?

There are a whole lot of superstitions that came with the unfolding of the brand new year.  It is believed that the events that occur during New Year’s Day may have an impact on the rest of the year.  So it is advised to be careful with your deeds, words and even decision-making.  It is also a popular belief to start a business or own retail franchises at the beginning of the year.  Other prevailing superstitious practices includes:

  • Don’t wash your hair or you will wash away any good luck for the new year.
  • Wear the color red for joy and happiness.
  • Don’t wear white or black as they are colors of mourning.
  • Don’t sweep the floor or clean or you may sweep away your luck.
  • Don’t use knives or scissors or you may cut off fortune.
  • Don’t lend money or you will be lending all year.
  • Don’t borrow money.

These are just few of the many superstitions that many believers or not tend to practice.  Whatever we do on New Year’s Eve or on New Year’s Day itself, it is our actions, our attitude and perseverance that determines the future of 2009.  Happy New Year once again!

“Don’t sweep the floor or clean or you may sweep away your luck.”

In contradiction, other peeps clean or clear up to shoo away the unlucky spirits.

And you’re right, we may chart a book of superstitions, but if our attitude or discipline doesn’t correspond to our actions, then 2009 will just merely be a continuation of 2008 bloopers.

    HAPPY 2009!
