Schengen Visa FAQ

July18

After I made an entry about Acquiring a Schengen Visa, google search has brought enough traffic to my site.  Many people came to my site to find answers to their questions.  Because of this, I am setting up a Schengen Visa FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) based on the searches they made on google that lead them to my site.  Hope this will be a good help.

Can I travel by road, boat or plane to other countries with a Schengen Visa?

Yes.  You can use whatever means of travel you prefer as long as the country you are visiting is a member of the Schengen organization.  According to the so-called Schengen agreement, tourist and business visas issued by a mission of one of the following countries are valid for travel to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.  As of 21 December 2007, 24 states and Monaco (treated as part of France) had abolished border controls on persons among themselves, an increase from 15 on 20 December 2007. The nine new countries which entered the Schengen travel area in 2007 were: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Switzerland has finally joined the Schengen Agreement last December 12, 2008.

Can I change my main destination after I get my Schengen Visa?

Yes.  You can change your main destination or even your port of entry even after your got stamped for Schengen Visa.  When I applied for Schengen Visa, I presented a plane ticket reservation to enter and exit Amsterdam.  When I got my visa, I found a better airfare deal and I can fly sooner if I enter Brussels, Belgium and exit Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  So, I took that flight and had no problems whatsoever with the Immigration Officer.

Can I use my Schengen Visa for my second visit?

Depending if you have a Single or Multiple entry Schengen Visa.

Single-entry Visa: This visa allows uninterrupted stay.  Once you depart the Schengen territory, you can no longer enter again without obtaining a new Schengen visa.

Multiple-entry Visa: This visa allows multiple stays in one or more Schengen countries as long as the total length of your stay does not exceed 90 days in a given 180 days period from the date of yourfirst entry.  You may stay continuously or you can spread it over several visits within the validity period of the visa, but no more than the number of entries allowed on our visa.  Multiple entry may be valid for 1 year.

If your visa entry shows “02″, you are allowed two entries.  If your entry shows “MULT”, you are allowed more than 2 entries.  Multiple entry visas is not issued at all consulates/embassies.

How much does a Schengen Visa Cost?

Currently, Schengen Visa costs €60.  Children below 6 years old are exempted from this fee.  There are other exemptions of which you should check on your Consulates or Embassies.

How long does it take to process a Schengen Visa?

It usually takes 3 weeks to process a visa.  If you have a complete requirements, it is possible that it could be sooner.

Who doesn’t need a Schengen Visa?

European Union (EU) nationals don’t require a visa for stays of up to 90 days.  Nationals of the following countries do not require a Schengen Visa: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong (Blue Passports Only), Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Korea (Rep Of), Latvia, Liechenstein, Lithuania, Macau, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Uruguay, USA, Vatican City and Venezuela.

If you are not on the list of countries above, you will need a schengen visa.

These are some of the usual questions and answers regarding Schengen Visa.   Should you have any more questions, just leave me a comment below so I can include it in the FAQ above.  Hope you find this helpful.  Good luck on your visa application!

Yes, you can travel to all Schengen Countries with a single entry C type Visa. You can hop from one country to the other as long as you are within the Schengen Territory. Once you got out of it the Schengen territory, you cannot enter unless you will get another VISA.

    Hello Dip Joshi!

Thanks for dropping by. Switzerland (where Zurich is) is still not a part of the Schengen organization. I understand that your flight might have a stop over in Zurich. You have to get down but stay in the airport for your next flight. If you want to go outside the airport and spend time in Zurich for at most 48 hrs, you need to have a Swiss Transit Visa. But if you plan to stay there more than than 2 days, you need to get a Swiss Tourist Visa.

if you plan to stay more than 3 months, you will need to apply for a temporary residence permit already. Schengen visas are only given to a maximum of 90 days.

with regards to showing proof of booking from other schengen countries, it is not necessary but if you can provide it, so much the better.

I need to be in Warsaw for my return travel to Ukraine and a flight is faster and cheaper than any other method – is there any way I can be certain before booking a ticket – as I want to avoid any problems at the airport – and others have had difficulties I have been told

    hello Sean!

thanks for dropping by. which country issued you the Schengen Visa? Base upon my reading, i have actually two different informations available. Poland and some other countries just joined the Schengen organization last December 2007.

This is the first one that I read from http://www.learn4good.com/travel/poland_visa.htm Schengen uniform visa does not give the right to enter Poland, with exception for transit of citizens of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine according to conditions indicated in bilateral agreements. according to that statemet, you should be fine to fly by plane as long as you are on transit only.

On the contrary, I checked on Poland Embassy in the US and this is the link: http://www.washington.polemb.net/index.php?document=104 . it says that it is okay to enter Poland as long as you are in possession of a Schengen short stay visa.

Just to be certain since we got two different info about this, try calling the Polish embassy there in Germany. This is their contact number: ( 49 30) 223130. Let me know how it went. I am very much interested to know about the outcome of your situation.

hello Chris! I have learned that The Poland Work Visa is a Polish residence visa with a right to employment in Poland. And since Poland just became a part of the Schengen organization last December of 2007, then you should be able to visit other Schengen countries that are mentioned above. If you are still doubting about it, it’s best to ask the local authorities there in Poland. we don’t want to get you in trouble. and let us know how it works for you.
    good luck!

once you get the Schengen Visa from Germany, you can use the same visa to travel to Lithuania. since Lithuania, along with some other countries joined the Schengen agreement last December. Just make sure you travel to Lithuania while your Schengen visa is still valid.

I recently got my schengan visa and it says Number of entries MULT, Duration of stay – 15 days, Validity till 13-10-08. I guess the duration of stay is 15 days because the roundtrip ticket is for those many days, but since the validity is till October 13, can i extend my trip and stay longer than 15 days? What exactly is the difference between duration of stay and validity?
    Thanks in advance!

  16. Avatar August 19th, 2008 at 10:37 am Jacy Says:

    hello Suchita!
congrats that you get a multiple entry visa. That means that you can go in an out of the Schengen territory many times until the validity of the Visa. The duration of the stay would mean that you have to stay there only up to 15 days unless you will apply for extension. The validity means that you can enter the Schengen territory anytime until 13-10-08.

If you want to stay longer than 15 days, you have two options.
-> File an extension of visa when you are in the Netherlands
-> Since you have MULT entry, after 15 days of stay, exit the Schengen territory and come back for another 15 days. But it should be done before the expiration of the visa-13-10-08. If you do this, the immigration officer might need to ask for your return or exit airline ticket to ensure you will not stay there forever.

Note: A visa is not a guarantee that you can enter a Schengen territory. Upon arrival, you will still need to present to the Immigration Officer the supporting documents like Insurance Policy and Return Ticket and others. It is the discretion of the Immigration Officer to grant or deny entry.

I am actually going to France and Swiss and total duration of my trip as of now is 10 days.So I am spending few days in France and then going to swiss, and then spending sometime there and come back to Paris to finally fly out of Europe to my home country. So from what I understand reading your post is within 15 days, If I go out of France to swiss (since swiss is still not under schengan yet) my 15 days will automatically get extended till the validity? So if I choose to go to Italy after coming back from Swiss, I dont have to worry about 15 days and just have to make sure before 13-10-08 i leave Schengan area. Am I right?

Hi, I’m having so much trouble getting a response from the Spanish consulate on this and I don’t think it’s a problem but I want to be sure:
I just got back to the US on June 6th from studying in Spain on a 180 day student visa that was valid from January 8 through July 7. I was in Spain and France until June 4th and flew home from Switzerland on June 5th. I have another study abroad in Spain that leaves on September 6th. This means I will have been out of Spain and the other Schengen countries for over 90 days. I will be staying for less than 90 days in Spain on this next trip. I just want to be sure that the presence of an expired on July 7th visa in my passport is not going to be a problem for me re-entering Spain…? Thanks!

    Hello Cristy,

Thanks for dropping by. I just want to make sure we are on the same page. What is your country of citizenship?

Since your student visa had expired last July 7, did you apply for another visa for this coming September trip? The presence of an expired visa is not a problem at all as long as you stayed in the Schengen territory for not more than the duration of stay given in your case 180 days.

If you plan to study on this next visit, you might need another visa. But if you just go there for pleasure, granting that you are a US Citizen, you will automatically get a 90 day stamp on your passport and no need for such visa.

I am not certain about how study abroad program works. But normally, if you go there for the reason of study, you need to have a visa.

Entering Schengen/Spain in your case won’t be a problem even without a visa. As long as you tell the immigration officer that you’re going there for tourist or pleasure. I’m afraid that if you let them know that you’re going to go there to study, they might ask for your student visa.

The concern might be when you start your program. Will they let you study without the visa? If yes, then you should not worry anymore.

    Hello Priya!
You may apply again at any time, though you may wish to consider the reasons you were refused and whether a fresh application will contain anything new that would lead to a different outcome.
Often applications are rejected because the purpose of the visit lacks plausibility and there is insufficient proof of the applicant’s readiness to return.
If you are convinced that if you apply for Business Visa through your employer will contain anything new that would lead to a different outcome, then go for it. But if the circumstances remains to be similar to your application with the Type D visa, I would advise you to not proceed to reapply.
Take not the Business Visa is not so much different from Type D visa in terms of requirements. The difference is that, it is the Employer who will be your guarantor.

A rejection letter is just a formality for the decision.

Personally, I think it’s okay to go ahead and proceed to apply for another type of Visa even without the rejection letter since it’s a different and new application which is independent from your previous one.

Just to be sure, call your embassy or consulate. They are the only ones who can be certain.

Unfortunately, you cannot enter the Schengen Terriroty (France, Germany and Italy) without possessing a Schengen Visa even if you have a Swiss Work Permit. If you really want to visit those countries, why not apply for a Schengen Visa?

Question2: I’m inclined to book an appointment with French embassy (with some bookings which i can cancel later) and then go to Italy? Will this be acceptable or is it too risky ?

    hello Sachin!

nice to know that you find my post helpful.

with regards to your situation, any embassy can’t guarantee to finish your application within 2 weeks. it is on a case to case basis. but most of them will take up to 3 weeks to finish the processing.

as for the second question, it is highly advised to apply a Schengen Visa in the French Embassy/Consulate if France is your main destination or if you are transiting through the Schengen States and France is the first country you are transiting through. however, you can still apply through them just as long as you can provide the documents and other requirements to be granted a visa. once you have the visa, it doesn’t really matter where your port of entry will be as long as you possess the Visa and the documents that supports your stay and guaranteed your exit on time.

After 21 December 2007, holders of a valid residence permit (including a residence permit for the purpose of study) will be able to travel in the countries of the Schengen area for up to 3 months. To travel, they will only need a valid residence permit issued by the Czech Republic and a valid passport.

If you are a holder of a multiple long-stay visa issued by the Czech Republic for the purpose of study, you will not be allowed to stay in the territory of other Schengen states, nor the UK or Switzerland. You will only be allowed to transit the other Schengen states (but not the non-Schengen EU Member States) for a period not exceeding 5 days and only in the direction to the Czech Republic. This is due to the fact that the visa is a national visa entitling only to the entry to and stay in the territory of the Czech Republic.

I opted for Aeroflot airlines (coz of cost factor) but they’re not ready to give the actual tickets till I get the visa. However they are ready to give me a PNR(PassangerNameRecord), printout of the ticket with the Aeroflot Airlines stamp as a confirmation. Can I apply with this PNR? Or do I need to buy an actual ticket?

You don’t need the actual ticket to present to the Embassy. All you have to show to them is your booking confirmation meaning you have made reservations with the airline. The PNR should serve it as long as it includes the itinerary of your flight including the return flights.

Good luck! And hope to hear from you soon with good news!

Yes, you got it correct. Sweden will be your main destination since you will be spending most of your days there, right? So, I expect that you are making the application at a Swedish Embassy/Consulate.

With regards to changing your itinerary after you get your visa, it is possible. They will not force you. The important thing is, upon entry to the Schengen region, you can show them your return ticket back to your hometown at the right time before your visa expires.

I wish you good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the quick response Jacy. Here in Domincan Republic, if you want to go to Sweden and some other european countries you have to go to the Spanish Emabassy and apply for the visa cause i called them (Swedish Embassy) and they said that i had to go to there, they just work on residence and other matters. Thing is i realize there is a question about If you reside in a country other than your country of origin, have you permission to return to that country? Normally, here we can buy Dominican visa. I got one not which is gonna expire on October 12 but imma go back to Haiti in order to buy another one for a year, Is this a problem since i was thinking of waiting after the answer of the consulate to do so? And other thing i paid an insurance for 60 days from 10/21 to 12/19 but the flight reservation27 to 12/27 do you think that might be a problem too? Thanks a lot Jacy

    Hello Carl!
This seemed to be a complicated situation you got here. Holding a temporary visa there in Dominican Republic which will expire on October 12 might possess a problem. Schengen authorities will be critical about you having the permission to go back to Dominican Republic after your trip from their territory. Coz if you can’t prove this, they will entertain the thought that you will not leave the Schengen territory. But if your return ticket will be towards your homeplace-Haiti, then there is a good chance you will get the visa.

As for the insurance. I would advise you to purchase the insurance enough to cover your flight reservations. With your existence insurance, the Schengen authority will be hesistant to give you a visa. Either extend your insurance or change your return before your insurance expires.

hi Jacy. I just got my schengen visa from the greek consulate. i’m just confused. it says there that the # of stay is 7 days, 1 entry. my booking is from my origin country to athens, then athens to my origin country. i plan to go to spain after staying in athens for 5 days, does it mean i can’t come back to athens? if i go to another country, does it mean i have only 2 days to stay and have to go back home? Thanks…

    hello Juliet!

first of all, i would like to thank you for visiting my site. second, i would like to congratulate you for getting the Schengen Visa.

So, with your visa and your plan to visit 2 places with a single entry, you will have to divide the 7 days among them before you go back home. Because once you exit, you can’t come back unless with a new Schengen Visa.

The single entry means that you can only enter the Schengen Territory once. Once you enter Athens, that is your one and only entry using this visa. If you will go back home from Athens, it would mean you cannot go back to Athens or to Spain or anywhere else in Schengen Territory unless you will get another Schengen Visa.

As for your number of days, it would mean you can stay anywhere in the Schengen Territory for a maximum of 7 days. If you plan to visit Spain, you will have to decide how many days you will stay in Athens so you will still have enough days (of the 7 days) in Spain.

    Jacy Reply:

    hello Juliet!

you can apply a visa extension as soon as you arrive in Greece. however, visa extension are only granted under special circumstances. there’s a fee attached to that as well.

Visa extensions are normally granted under special extenuating circumstances, such as being in the hospital, having a serious car accident or a relative passing away, not because of ignorance regarding visas/permits, careless planning, unexpectedly falling in love, taking illegal work and just because.

    1. Apply between 7 to 25 days in advance of your visa’s expiration

    2. Fill out the one-page Greek/English/French visa extension form provided to you by the alien’s bureau or police station (Greece does not typically offer any forms online)

    3. Provide any supporting evidence for needing an extension to the person in charge, who will give you a verbal answer

If you are approved, you will need to provide:

    1. Four (4) passport size color photos

    2. Proof of residence while in Greece (i.e. Letter from the person with whom you’re staying, hotel bill, statement of facts); the person in charge will request what is specifically needed for your case.

    3. Proof of minimum financial means, which is a bank statement showing you have at least 450 euros/month or 15 euros/day for the length of your extension

    4. Two (2) copies of the entry stamp to the Schengen zone or visa sticker in your passport

    5. A passport that is valid for the period in which you are requesting an extension (i.e. If you’re asking for a 3-month extension, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months)

    6. A flat fee of 464 euros, whether your extension is a minimum of one (1) day or a maximum of six (6) months (incorrectly reported as 364 euros by the Athens News); six (6) month extensions are granted for special extenuating circumstances

The Alien’s Bureau or police station will give you a paper to put in your passport to show authorities when exiting Greece to avoid being stopped and fined.

The word ‘extension’ implies there is something valid to prolong, which means this is no longer the case if your visa has already expired.

This only applies in Greece as other states or country deals with visa extension differently.

yes you can apply again. Often applications are rejected because the purpose of the visit lacks plausibility and there is insufficient proof of the applicant’s readiness to return.

if you can prove that you have reasons to go back to your origin, then the visa will be approved more likely.

You can definitely travel between Paris and any parts of France and Monaco since Monaco (treated as part of France) is already part of the Schengen Agreement.

Unfortunately, Andorra is not integrated to the Schengen area yet, and border controls remain between it and both France and Spain.

So I would suggest stay within the Schengen, and don’t go to Andorra coz if you do, you can’t enter back to the Schengen area because you only have a single entry.

    hello Eli!

in most cases, it is more difficult to obtain a Student visa in Czech Republic or any other places compared to a tourist visa. one reason is that it will require additional documents like a letter of acceptance in the University in Czech, a notarized document stating the Accomodation, and police certificate on top of the requirements for a regular Schengen (tourist) visa.

I am not sure if there will be a significant difference in terms of processing time and hassle if you apply for a Student Visa in Czech which covers Schengen zone or not.

    Hi!

I find your website while I’m trying to fill in my Schengen visa application. You’re very helpful! I’m from Indonesia, currently studying in Singapore. I’m going to apply for the visa through the Netherlands embassy.

My first point of entry is France (Staying for 6 days) and then I’ll go to the Netherlands and stay there for 8 days.

I’m wondering whether i can tick more than one “purpose of travel”. I am going to France to attend a conference, but then I’m going to the Netherlands purely for holiday. So I was thinking about ticking “Tourism” and “Other”: attending conference. If I can only tick one, should I tick “other: attending conference” since it’s my main purpose, or tick “Tourism” since it’s my purpose of going to the Netherlands?

    Thank you. Wish me luck!:P

Good Luck Ica on your Schengen Visa Application!

If your main purpose is to attend the conference in France and going to the Netherlands is just a side-trip, then your main destination should be in France and the application should be made in the French Embassy. If this is your path, you should go ahead and tick on “Other: Attend Conference” on your application.

On the other hand, if you the documents you are submitting for visa application will support your tourism in the Netherlands more than the Conference in France, then go ahead tick on “tourism” and apply in the Netherlands Embassy.

If you apply in the Netherlands Embassy for tourism and mentioning your main purpose of attending a conference in France, they might tell you to apply in the French Embassy instead.

    Hello Astha!

I have read that Italian Embassy does not easily give out Schengen Visas that other countries are more favorable in comparison to them. However, it is stated in their procedure that you need to apply to the embassy of your main destination and if you don’t have it, apply at the embassy of your port of entry.

If your main destination is France but wants to enter in Italy, you may go ahead and make the application for the visa at the French Embassy even if in your itinerary your enter and exit ports are in Italy. Although to be safe, it is advisable to have your enter and exit points on the same country.

I don’t think there’s a complication regarding the 6 months validity of your Uk work permit and the 3 months Schengen visa you are applying.

In my experience, this is not a professional or legal advise, you may change your port of entry and exits after you get your visa. Just as long as you present to the Immigration officer the documents that will assure them or prove to them that you won’t be overstaying e.g. a return ticket.

You will still need to get a Schengen Visa to be able to travel to the Schengen Territory. Being a holder of a B permit, you are eligible to get Schengen visa valid for six month.

You don’t need a Schengen visa if you only TRANSIT through the Schengen countries for 5 days to arrive at your destination.

Rumor has it that Switzerland may finally join the Agreement before the end of 2008. But that remains to be seen.

unfortunately, you (like me) belong to a category which are subject to a visa requirement with your Type-D visa. So you may not travel to other Schengen territory like Italy unless you apply for a Schengen Uniform Visa Category C.
Long-stay D visas authorize their holders solely to one transit through the territories of other Schengen states in direction to the state which issued such a D visa.
If you plan to travel to Italy, you can apply at the Italian Embassy there in Belgium for the Schengen Uniform Visa.

You’re welcome, Moa! if your visa will contain exactly as what it is in the receipt, then it would mean that you can stay for 10 days in 1 trip and another 10 days for your trip on January.

they usually give you a duration of stay depending on the papers you presented like the insurance for example. there is no minimum number of stay.

A visa issued for 90 days can not be extended. During a 6 month period the applicant is entitled to stay within the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days, after which there will be a quarantine for 3 months before another 90 days can be granted for Schengen.

    hello vladimir!

currently, holders of B visa or permit does not need to have a visa to cross through Schengen Countries granting it is for Transit for a maximum of 5 days.

The Federal Council decision of May 30, 2008, is a confirmation of the council’s intention to begin operative Schengen cooperation possibly still this year, that is possibly on December 5 or 6, 2008. However, this date is subject to approval by the European Council, probably in November 2008. Approval depends on the favorable outcome of the current Schengen evaluation of Switzerland’s performance. If the evaluation is favorable, Swiss diplomatic representations will be authorized to issue Schengen visas from December 5 or 6, 2008.

If you can’t wait for this decision, you can apply for a Schengen visa at the Netherlands Embassy there in Switzerland.

there is actually no specific period of time that you need to take before you can make another visa application.

you can make the re-application anytime. but you might want to consider the reasons why your wife and son was rejected for the visa. coz if the situation has not changed, you will still get another denial regardless where you made the application.

as for that statement in the last page of the passport, it is translated as:

    VISA application on 29/10/08
    Consul General of France Pondicherry
    Type C (Short-term Visitor’s Visa)

but what my suspect is like, usually there will be one seperate page where they will mention like rejected. but for my wife and children passport it has only the above mentioned information is on 36′th page.

is it like that? or they missed for visa stamping. i think the above means it went 29′th oct to CGF Pondicherry and for Type C visa. but there is no rejected status on it.

for both Czech Republic (or other Schengen States) and Switzerland, upon entry you will automatically get 90 days of Tourist Visa. that means you don’t have to worry about visa extension after your 7 days stay since you are an American Citizen who is allowed to stay in Schengen and Switzerland for a maximum of 90 days.

working in Beijing gives you residency there, correct? then, it should be okay to apply there. and i don’t think that is a reason for rejection.

what documentation did you present? did you present an invite from your Polish friend? insurance policy? booking of roundtrip ticket? howabout bank statements? the main reason for rejection is that there are not enough proof of necessity to leave the Schengen region.

is your working visa there in Beijing goign to expire soon? if not, your work contract there should be another document that you present to them to guarantee that you have to go back to Beijing to finish it after your trip in Poland.

A visa may only be extended if new facts have arisen since the visa was issued. A visa extension may not result in the duration of the stay exceeding 90 days. Applications to extend a visa have very powerful reasons to undertake this action, humanitarian grounds or serious occupational or personal reasons. The authority may charge a fee for extending visas.

    Hello Ajay!

Multiple entry visa will allow you more than 2 entries to the Schengen Region. Unfortuantely, your total number of stay should now exceed 90 days in a given 180 days period from the date of the first entry.

This being said, you are only allowed 90 days within 6 months. So, if you used all the 90 days in 1 visit and make an exit, you cannot enter again unless the period of 6 months is over. However, if you use only 30 days on your 1st visit, you can exit and enter again and stay for 60 days.

If you want to stay for more than 90 days, you need to get a residence permit. If you use the 90 days, and exit the Schengen Region, you can’t go back until after 6 months.

If you are not yet in Poland, you can apply for a residence permit at the Polish Embassy or Consulate. If you are already there, you can do so at the relevant voivodship of the district that you want to reside. Here are some more info: Temporary Residence Permit in Poland

when i looked it up online for similar situations like yours, i have read that someone was told that the visa renewal or extension can’t be done in Germany where he’s from but he was given the option to apply for a residence permit.

    hello Shirin!

i apologize if i was not too clear with my answer earlier. a Multiple entry visa may be valid for longer sometimes even 5 years. that means that you can use the visa until its validity. you don’t need to reapply every 6 months if you used the 90 days within that period. all you have to do is wait for the next 6 months and then you will have another 90 days fresh.

let me site and example. you are traveling to Belgium on January for 30 days. sometime in May you decided to go to France and stayed there for 60 days. within the span of 6 months (in this case January to June), you have already used all the 90 days. that means you can’t enter the Schengen Region anymore. but come July, you will then have another fresh 90 days visa to use within July to December. This explains the 90 days of stay within the 6 month period limitation of a Multiple entry visa. if you go there for only short stays, then this shoudl not be an issue.

    Hi Jacy
Im Manju and I along with my husband had applied for a multiple entry Schengen Visa through postal application to the French Embassy from Belfast, Northern Ireland. We had planned for XMAS holidays in Paris. Both of us have Indian passports and currently in UK on work permit visa. The Visa was rejected and we think the reason was to the incorrectly filled credit card authorization form for the Visa fees(No money was taken from the account). Can we reapply for the Schengen Visa using Post Office money order as the visa application fee? Or should we cancel our trip??
    Your thoughts are highly appreciated.

I don’t think you are rejected. Your application has been returned to you since postal applications are not accepted. This explains why there is no money taken from the account. You need to make the application in person and if you provide them with all the documents necessary and a registered envelope with paid postage, they can return your passport to you by post.

A back statement is necessary as your evidence of sufficient funds to cover the cost of your intended stay. Since you are employed there in the UK, A recent and original letter from your employer, stating the start date of your employment contract and your last payslip is required. Although they usually require the last 3 months of bank statement and salary slip, when I checked on the Netherlands Embassy in UK, it is not the case. But to make sure, I advise you should call them. This is the website that you can find all the requirements that you need: Schengen Visa Requirements to the Netherlands

    Hi Jacy,

This is Srisailam from India. I have applied for schengen Visa from Finland in July 2008 for a Visa Type-Conference but was Refused. Reasons was stated as unclear of accomodation and unclear reason of the visit whereas there was a valid reason of Conference as i am working for a Christian Missionary as a Technical Advisor since Early this Year and the Invitation from the Finnish Man who hosts conference and he has clearly said he will take care of Accomodation and travel expenses till we are in Finland and we 4 people have applied for the Visa and one among us had already visited Finland twice but other three were first time visitors and one among us was UK rejected and has not brought Previous Passport while applying tfor the Schengen Visa at Embassy-Delhi is this the reason they had suspicion? and in my case i had all the documents of Credit Card and Bank Statement – as Financial Supports, but they have not asked so i have not produced while submitting the application- can this be the reason for my Visa refusal?
Again in the mOnth of Novmber 2008 i have applied for Schengen Visa again for CoNference this time from Sweden Embassy for Visiting Friends and relatives as well as for Conference but i was again rejected and the reason i think is they think i am potential migrant who will not return back to india.
I had no such intentions actually as i have a family here in India to look after how can i settle there in Sweden. I was so heartbroken. Is this the way they deal the second time also. They should have some condition or gurantee which i would have fulfilled of returning back to India after the Visit.
I was so excited to visit Europe but dreaams shattered even when I have no wrong intentions at all to visit Europe as i am a travel enthusiast iahve travelled many tourist countries like singapore and malaysia, dubai , china, hong kong

Can i apply again this time as a Tourist as i want to visit beautiful Europe at any cost.

I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected for several times. When you applied for a visa in Finland, did you present a proof that you had an accomodation (like hotel booking or so) other than a word from the one who invited you? A word from the host is not a guarantee so the Embassy would need a more tangible evidence to prove it. other than that, even if the Embassy did not asked for you, if you submitted your bank statement and it will prove that you have sufficient evidence to cover your stay (and maybe your accomodation), you might have been approved. But still, I am no embassy.

When you applied this month at the Swedish Embassy, did you submit an employment letter or anything to prove that you have reasons to go back? The embassies would always have a doubt on anyone applying for any visa for possible overstay or not going back to their country of origin. It is up to us applicants to prove them otherwise. That is why we produce the documents like letter from employer. Did you produce a document that proves the Conference is taking place?

    Hi Jacy,
I did provide the Appendix Form from the Host duly filled and the invitation that he will be taking care of all my needs like accomodation, food, transport till in in Sweden. I have also provided the employer certificates of coming back and joining my work. But the mistake i did is when they asked about my future plans i said as i am Technical Advisor in my organization i have plans to expand by opening and computer service centre in near future. Does that have anything to do with rejection. Jacy Please let me know if i can apply again for Schengen Visa after getting rejected twice?? I am no liability to the schengen countries as i have to come back at any cost to my home country as i have a family to look after and moreover iam home sick i cant stay for more than a month without seeing my family.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I CAN APPLY AGAIN IN NEXT FEW MONTHS AGAIN??

One of the documents that I need to submit with the visa form is a bank statement for the last three months. I came to UK only in the last week of September and my UK bank account was opened only in early November, so I can only submit one months’ bank statement (which has sufficient funds, of course). Do you think my visa application might be rejected? I have been in the EU before – I lived in Germany on a work permit for a year. Can this be an advantage when I don’t have the necessary three months’ bank statement?

Take note that London or the UK is still not part of the Schengen Agreement. So, you might want to get a multiple-entry Schengen visa if you want to visit Paris then London and then Prague. Also, you need to apply for a UK Tourist visa so you can enter London. If you decide to visit both Prague and Paris all at once before you exit the Schengen are then you only need a single-entry visa.

Some people I know who already got the visa got away with it and have no problems. If it were me though, I don’t want to risk it and have a bad record with them. Just my 2 cents.

Applications to extend a visa have very powerful reasons to undertake this action, humanitarian grounds or serious occupational or personal reasons. you’d usually need to produce documents that will prove that it is necessary for you to extend your stay and that would include but not limited to travel insurance, sufficient bank funds and others. i have heard that extending a visa is not likely possible. but you can always try. good luck!

I am no expert. It is just based on my experience and further readings on certain cases.

As for your case, the 90 days max stay within 90 days should no longer matter since the Visa that applies to this situation will expire on the Jan 31st. So, common sense tells me that you can go ahead and apply for a new visa as soon as Feb 1st. But my best advise is to clarify this to the Consulate or Embassy where you are going to apply for the new Visa. Better be safe than sorry.

    Good luck!

Also, I had been to Germany for a month, more a year ago, on a single entry, Type-D, German visa. I had applied for a Schengen visa, but I have no idea why I ended up with just a German (Deutschland) visa. Will this have any bearing on my new visa application?

    hello Abhi!
Switzerland has just joined the Schengen Agreement last December 12 and starting December 15, they will be issuing Schengen Visas. If you have a stopover in Zurich and needs to go out of the airport, you will need to apply for a Short Stay Schengen Visa. Transit visa is only applicable if you stay within the Transit area of the airport and you don’t go out of the Customs. You can always apply for a multiple-entry visa but it’s the embassy’s disgression to give you such.

I am not certain if yoru previous Germany Visa will have any bearing on your visa application as most visa application is indepentent from each other. If it has any, it will definitely be on your advantage. As for the requirements, this may give you an ida: Acquiring a Schengen Visa

    Jacy Reply:

    hello Victoria!
The duration of stay is counted from the moment you entered or arrived the Schengen territory. So if they say 15 days, you will have to make adjustments to your ticket so you can exit the region after 15 days. Let’s take for example your flight is on the 23rd of December and you will arrive on the same day- 23.12, then that day is counted as your first day. If you add 14 more days, that would mean that you should have an exit visa stamped on the 6th of January.
To verify, your flight is on the 23rd right? What date are you arriving in the Schengen Territory? The time diffirence might account that you’ll arrive the day after so your 15 days will start on the 24th and you can leave on the 7th of January to have the complete 15 days.

If you exit the Schengen territory after 1 day, that is still considered and overstay. You can still go back to your homeplace but such record will affect your next visa application.

    hello Rajesh!

The duration of stay which is on your case 19 days is counted from the very moment you entered the Schengen Region. The Visa validity which is 24.01.09 – 14.02.09 is the period when you can use the 19 days visa. This would mean that you will have to make changes on your flight and exit the Schengen after your 19 days if over or else you will be marked as overstaying and will have problems in your future visa application. You can try to ask the Consulate or Embassy that issued the visa if they can make such into 22 days. But usually, they would advise you to file the extension when you’re in Schengen which is unlikely to be granted. But you can always try.

    Good luck!

Now that you are aware that Switzerland is part of the Schengen Territory, going out of the Swiss airport would then be your entry to the Schengen Territory. and you can now move freely back and from from Switzerland to Spain or any other Schengen Country. So, the single entry doesn’t matter anymore between these two countries. It is only when you enter a non-Schengen territory that you can no longer enter the Schengen Area again because of your possession of the Single Entry visa.

    Hi Nina!
If you are to ask me, it doesn’t matter whether they have separated Schengen/Non-Schengen flights at the Zurich airport. What is important is that Switzerland is now part of Schengen. If you are stamped in going out, that should be a stamped that will indicate you have entered the Schengen territory. Going out of the Zurich to head to Spain should be considered a domestic flight or internal travel within Schengen region. If you just want to be certain about this, call your consulate or embassy and you’ll probably get the same answer.

You have a MULTiple entry visa. That means, you can go to other Non-Schengen places and back to Spain or Schengen Territory without any problems. That visa will allow you exit and entry multiple times until its expiration.

I am in a situation when I have already entered schengen territory with new visa and passed more than 90 days here in last 6 months. But I came to know it now, that stay more than 90days in any six month is not valid.

I want to know what implications are possible. Because I was granted a new visa, with new validity of 3 months, I never bothered to check if my last stay here may not allow me to enter even with new visa.

    Please suggest.

The 90 days within 6 month period applies to the person travelling and is not dependent on the whether the visa is new or not. So you can only travel and enter the Schengen territory after the 6 month period.

You can try to ask the Embassy that gave you the visa. they may give you a better advise.

And i got rejection for my request but didn’t get the reason why.( My request was for short term visa 30 days. )
The Secretary of this Embassy said nothing wrong with my document and data.
and when I asked ” then what is the reason i got rejection?”
The answer from her only “no comment.”

here the details of my document :
    - application form
    - photocopy passport.
    - picture.
    - print out ticket
    - print out bank ( amount in there i think is enough )
    - Travel insurance.
    - Visa invitation ( with registration code )

And i wonder what could be the reason to get rejection in my situation?

in this case they didn’t have my passport while process.cause i live in another city and i need my passport to back to the city by plane.
and they let me to keep my passport with me.
is it could be the reason?
I don’t have resident permit in China and stay here with holding Visa type L. ( in case when the process my China visa almost expire )
also i can’t get letter of employment ( they didn’t ask for it ).

do you think one of it could be the reason i got rejection? or you have other opinion for it?
if yes could you tell me?

and what i need to do for the next time i will re-apply the visa?

Typically, only residents of that country are allowed to apply for a Schengen visa at any Schengen Representation. This might be a different case in your part. I checked on the Beijing Embassy if only a resident can make an application, I could not find any information pertaining to this. What I suspect that would be the reason of the refusal might simply be the absence of your passport since it is a requirement and it is needed so they can affix or attach a visa. did you also include a proof of your accomodation and cost of stay in Estonia?

Only the embassy can tell you whether it is a rejection or on what grounds you are rejected. In the future, just make sure to have all the documents ready even that you think will prove that you have no reasons to overstay in Estonia or any other Schengen state even if they did not ask for it.

I wish you good luck on your next visa application.

just want to make somethign clear. do you have a residence permit in the UK being there on a student visa? If so, then you can apply to any schengen representation in UK. what you need to consider though is that you need to make the application on the embassy of your main destination. it sounds like Poland right now is your main destination. but if you can prove to the french consulate or embassy that france would be your main destination that you would spend the same amount of time in both countries and have france as your port of entry, then you should be able to apply at the french embassy.

some embassies will not accept application and will refer you to the embassy of the country which is your main destination. that is better than having the application accepted but later on be rejected.

    i wish you good luck!

    hello Ricky!

you have made a good research and this has definitely shed some light on your concern. the link you gave me verified that only residents of China can make a Schengen or even US visa application. If in some cases your visa is accepted and approved this might turn out to be a fake and upon arrival at the Schengen territory, you will then be deported back to where you came from.

What you can do is to get a real residence permit in China (beware of those bogus ones) and apply for a Schengen visa. If this is not an option, go back to your home country and make an application there.

As for rejections, I don’t think I’ve heard about this. What I know is that, there are other people who applied 3x for a Schengen visa.

I wish you good luck, Ricky!

typically it takes about 1 day to 3+ weeks for the processing to be completed. I am not certain how long it takes if the application is made in another Schengen Country. It is strongly reccomended to enquire at least 12 weeks in advance. Your best bet is to call the embassy that you made the application and ask them for the status of your application and how long do they think it will take them to approve it. They are the only ones who can give you the precise answer.

one clarification, on your way to Delhi, are you going out of the airport? if not, then you should only be applying for a Schengen Visa which should be valid at the time that you decide to go out of the airport.

if you plan to go out to the city on your way to Delhi and back to NY, then you should apply for a multiple-entry Schengen Visa. it has to be multiple entry or else you will no longer be allowed to enter the Schengen territory once you made your exit if you only have a single entry. a single entry with 2-day stay valid from jan 20 to March 26 will only be used in one entry.

My question is, should I apply for a 2-entry or a multi-entry visa? For a case like mine, is Netherlands embassy known to deny multi-entry more readily than 2-entry visa?

If I have to play it safe, I don’t mind applying just for a single-entry visa and visiting Amsterdam only on the way back from Delhi; and not leaving the airport on the way to Delhi. It will be such a waste of opportunity, though.

it actually doesn’t matter if it’s a multiple-entry or single. if they think you are not qualified to have multiply entry but you are qualified to enter the Schengen territory, they will stamp your visa with a single entry.

However if this is not possible, purchase a ticket that is valid for a refund if worse comes to worst and the visa won’t be approved.

Typically, the maximum days of stay allowed for a Schengen visa is 90 days. So, 1 month will not pose a risk. The allowed # of days of stay will be based on your itinerary and roundtrip ticket. Since you will be staying with your relatives, ask your relative to get an invitation from their “Gemeente” or Municipal Hall. Then they have to send it to you so you can include it for your application.

what you have read is true. if she only has a single-entry visa and you’d like to go to Andorra in between Schengen countries, she would no longer be able to enter another Schengen region. Which means, she has already used her single-entry and terminated when she made an exit. If you want to push through this, it is totally a big risk. She may not be able to enter the Schengen again if there’s a border check. I would advise you to travel and visit Schengen countries first before deciding to go to non-Schengen.

If you are visiting other Schengen and have the same amount of time spent there, France should be the last destination. Here’s the link that should help you: Embassy of France in Australia

    Hi,

I am an EU citizen (Schengen country) and live and work in China.
My family is going to visit Europe during holidays (1 month trip).
We would like to give our Ayi (Chinese house helper, looking after kids) a change to join us in the trip.

She is not officially working anywhere. She hasis married, and has an adult son

Do you have any idea if it is possible to get a visa for her.
She would be traveling with us, and I would pay all the costs.

    Hi Denis!
You will have to petition her and invite her and provide documents that will prove your relation to her as well as a document stating that you will take care of her accomodation and expenses. But I must admit that she has the lesser chance to be approved be it known that from the sound of it (not having official job and no dependent children since her son is an adult), she has no reason to go back to China.
That is something that you have to prove to the embassy that she has all the right reasons to go back in China.

    Hi

I have schengen Visa multiple entry,
I am currently in Zurich, I visa expires on the 11th of Feb 2009 but my flight is only for the 13th of Feb 2009, i heard that theres a 5 day tolerance that is allowed, a guy from the swiss air travel agency informed me of this and mentioned that all i need to do is, go to any police station and get a letter.

Do you know of any such tolerance that is allowed?
And is it a big issue if i leave Zurich 2 days after my visa expires?

    hi Zain!

I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with that 5 day tolerance. You should ask your local authority or the alien police about it as soon as possible. Only then you will know the real score. Ask them sooner so that you if it’s not allowed, you still have time to change your flight. Airlines don’t usually charge you to change your flight earlier than the sked as long as the flight is not full.

If it’s a big issue or not, it depends upon the local authority’s decision if they do have that 5 day tolerance. if they don’t, an overstay for even just 1 day is an overstay and could affect your future visa application.

Let us know how things went with the police. we’d appreciate such information.

    Hi
    Excellent work really !
well, I live in Cairo, Egypt and I’ve applied for a short stay business visa for Italy to have a 3 months training there. I got this stamp “Application recieved on 7 Jan. , Cairo Consulate” which turned out to be a refusal. The thing is they refuse to give any reasons as usual and I did deliver all the required documents.
-Invitations sent by partner in Italy
-HR letter from my company mentioning the salary and that expenses are all covered by company
    -traveller cheques and debit card
-bank statement(didnot contain sufficient amount but i was counting on cheques and company’s letter)
    -traveller insurance
    -hotel and flight reservation

Currently do you think re-applying in the same conditions is a good idea, since there’s nothing more i can provide for them.

And this stamp , will it cause me more troubles if i apply for the visa through other schengen state ?

    Thanks alot

    Hi Karim!
I’m sorry to hear that you got denied for a visa. I must admit that Italy is one of the countries that is difficult to acquire a visa.
If you are going to apply in the same condition even at a different embassy, it has a great possibility that the decision will be the same.
Your previous application and decision can be seen in the system and if there is no changes of the conditions, decision may not change as well.

The stamp will not necessary cause you trouble. If you got denied in Italy for that trip, another trip with another purpose and applying in another embassy with the necessary documents will have an independent verdict from your previous application.

    hello Radovan!

It is true. Technically, the maximum C visa is 90 days. if you are given this as the maximum, it can be used within a 6 month period accumulated or used straight. In your case, 30 is your maximum stay and it is only valid for 1 year. So you can spend 30 days straight on the first 6 months or you can enter and exit Schengen territory of which stay will total to 30 days within the 6 month period.

    Hi Jackie!
sorry if it took me awhile to reply to your query. allow me to list the requirements that are needed just to give you a checklist to see if you got everything:

    1. Application Form completely filled up and signed.
    2. 2 recent passport photographs with applicant’s full name and birth date written on the back (1 picture glued to the form; 1 loosely attached)
    3. Valid passport (valid for at least 3 months after expected date of return; passport must not be damaged) and Xerox copy of the applicant’s passport (pages containing data and Schengen-Visas)
    4. A letter of invitation of the person in Germany including a photocopy of his passport.
    5. A letter of guarantee or Original Affidavit of support (“Verpflichtungserklärung”), together with proof of income (which must be equal or higher then the minimum wage for an adult in Germany) such as the 3 latest salaryslips of the host.
    6. Round-trip confirmed flight reservation and complete itinerary (NOT airline ticket, you can actually just ask this from your local travel agency free of charge. just a reservation with your name and the flight number should work. don’t purchase a ticket yet since it is not a guarantee that you will be given a visa even if you have an airline ticket)
    7. Proof of health insurance valid for all Schengen States covering an amount of € 30.000
    8. do you work? if so, provide an Employment Certificate or a recent employers’ statement that should mention salary, date of entree and duration of absence
    9. For students: registration from a school or university and if travelling during study period, certificate from school of university with permission of absence
    10. Declaration to be signed by the applicant
    11. if you have previous passports, provide them as well

if you have all the documents and you can readily answer what questions the consul has for your like, what’s the purpose of your trip? how long will you be staying there? how do you know this person inviting you? who’s paying the expenses? and others, you should have greater chance to be granted a visa. other than that, it all depends on the consul.

good luck! and let us know how things went with you.

    Hi Jacy,

I was just issued a Schengen Visa today by the German consulate and found out that the dates on the visa were inaccurate. My visa application had the following dates 2/16/2000 – 4/11/2009 and I provided flight details and iteneraries for my several flights back and forth US and Germany (business trips) for the aforementioned period; however they only retained one of the itenararies (3/08/2009 – 3/22/2009) and told me that that was the basis of my visa date. Given all of that, I am not sure what to do, because I was already expected to be in Germany ASAP and then now I had issues with the dates. Would a visa extension be the best alternative for me (from 3/24/2009 – 4/11/2009) given that the company I work for will be writing requests and stating the urgency that I stay in Germany up to that date?

I forgot to mention that I am a US resident with a Philippine passport. Since I have already gone through the whole 2 week application process, which they granted me a visa (Multiple Entry, 15 days), will it still take a long time to file for an extension (2 to 3 weeks again)? Will I be able to still leave on 3/08/2009 for Germany while I am still waiting on my visa extension to be processed in the US? Is it possible for me to leave the German consulate a copy of my passport instead and fly back to the US to get the extension stamp? Your thoughts will be truly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.

    hi Alli!
I am curious why you sent them two itineraries? the consulate or embassy would always base their decision (as to the approval or rejection, duration of stay) upon the documents that you submitted them. what were those two itineraries? does it include 2 entries and exits to the territory? if so, that could be the reason why you were granted the multiple entry visa for 15 days each entry.
to be honest with you, i have not experienced extending a visa. but as what i’ve heard, it’s very time consuming and it is rarely granted. but since you have multiple entry visa, all you need is to exit or take a trip outside the Schengen territory and back again. then you’ll have another fresh 15 days.
but if you think the days they granted you came as a mistake, you can always ask the embassy or consulate to have them fixed it for you. i had that experience on my last visa application. the number of days they stamped on my passport does not correspond to the number of days i have on my itinerary. but since there was no time for them to give me the correct visa, the Netherlands embassy just faxed me a letter stating the correct number of days that i was granted for and that they made an error in their part. i simply presented that document when i enter and left the Schengen without any problems.

“without prejudice” means that the decision made on that visa application cannot be used as a precedence to the future visa application that you will be having.
so it’s not really a bad thing. just make sure next time you apply, you have all the papers needed.

Hi Jacy, seems I can ask you about my case.
I just got TYPE D visa from germany embassy in Jakarta.(I’m Indonesian)
Since I just got ticket to fly to germany by transit in netherland (Schiphol) then, do u think i can go to germany from Schiphol by train by using this type of visa?
    I am a bit confuse..
but u can refer to this:
    National visa (D visa)
You will need to apply for a national visa (D visa) if you are planning to stay in Germany for more than 90 consecutive days, for instance for a prolonged visit, or if you will be studying or will be employed in Germany. The relevant German diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) will initially issue you with a visa with which you will be able to enter Germany.

A national visa entitles you to reside in Germany and is usually valid for a period of three months. Before this period expires, you must apply to the relevant Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde) to have your D visa extended by a residence permit.

Depending on the purpose of your visit, it may be the case that the national visa can only be issued with the prior consent of the Foreigners’ Registration Office at your future place of residence in Germany. Consent of this type will be required if, for example, you are coming to Germany to study, to apply to study, to work, to join family members already in Germany, or to get married.

The consent of the Foreigners’ Registrations Office is not necessary for:

    * Visiting scientists and scholars and their families, if the academic visit has been arranged through the agency of a German scientific or academic organization (DAAD, DFG, AvH, etc.) and the visitor has been awarded a scholarship or grant from public funds.
    * Visiting scientists and scholars and their families, if they have been invited to Germany to engage in scientific or academic research by a university or other publicly funded research institution.
    * Foreign students who were selected by a German scientific or academic organization and who have been awarded a scholarship or grant from public funds.

    it was taken from:

    Type D Schengen visa

National visa for a visit of up to 90 days, valid for the territory of the Schengen State that issued the visa (in your case Germany) but also valid for transit through the territory of other Schengen States(Schiphol, The Netherlands) for the purpose of reaching the State that issued the visa.

Since it is already 24th March, what are my chances of getting the schengen visa in time. I already had made my Hotel bookings in brussels and had already got a connecting flight from Brussels to India on 8th.

I am Pakitsani national and have Schengen Visa valid for one year from Sep 08 – 09 with multiple entry. Visa Type is C + D. I obtained this visa from Italian Embassy in Pakistan.

The reason to get the visa is to avail the study course in Italy for one year, but later i changed my plan and didnt joined the course.

Now i am planning to visit Italy and other Schengen States for tourism purpose. Is there will be any problem to visit these countries.

My 2nd Question is, that from the italian embassy i got one paper which states that.

National visa is valid for long stay in Italy, and short transit to other Schengen States ( 5 days maximum), is that means that i can stay in other Schengen countries only for 5 days?, though my visa type is C + D.

Urgent response will be appreciated as i plan to visit Europe in 2 weeks time.

    hi Jade!

Upon entry, the immigration officer might still asked for your documentation to prove that you are going their to study since it was the reason the visa was approved for. I could also be wrong. Some immigration officers, overlook it too.

Your D+C Schengen visa allows you to be a resident in Italy and travel as a tourist in the other Schengen countries during the time your D+C visa is valid (in your case a year). As a resident of one of the Schengen countries and holder of a D+C visa you get the same privileges in regards to tourism inside the Schengen Area as an American, Canadian, etc citizen who can enter visa-free. This tourist travel to (other) Schengen countries (not Italy in your case) is limited to 90 days in a 180 day period, so yes, the validity of the C part of your visa is 90 days. But it is tied to the D part of your visa (the Italian residency permit), which means that as long as the Italian residency permit is in effect the C visa is valid too.

In effect, that is what Schengen is all about: a common travel area. The ideas were that first a tourist visa is valid for all Schengen states. Second idea was that a resident of one the Schengen states (holder of a D-type visa) should not need to apply for a visa when he wants to go for tourism to another Schengen country, even if he would otherwise need a visa for tourism purposes, thus the construction of the D+C visa.

I have one more question, i read on several websites that validity for the C type visa when issued with D +C visa is 90 days from the date of validity, is that means that visa issued to me on sep 2008 is no more valid to visit other schegen states.

Some websites states that, these 90 days are for a 6 month duration. so if i plan to go to other schengen states now, can i visit the other countries as i will be availing the 90 days for my next set of 6 months for my visa?

I need a clear information regarding it, as i have to visit over there. detailed response will be appreciated.

Please help me find the right answer for this because it has left me confused and worried. I know I can travel within Switzerland with this visa, but I will be going elsewhere, within Europe, after the expiration date. Salamat in advance!

    hi Melody!
technically, you don’t need a Schengen visa to travel to the Schengen territory since you are a US passport holder/citizen. upon entry in the Schengen region, your passport will automatically be stamped for 90 days.

since you have a swiss visa to study, you might want to verify it at the embassy just to play safe.

I already have ticket reservation for Germany. However, a friend of mine is asking me to visit him in Spain and also, I have found out that the flights to Spain are cheaper than going to Germany, so If I get my German Visa next week, Could I just change my flight as follows: Chile – Spain – Chile (entering the Shengen through Amsterdam) and fly to Germany from Spain after I have visited my friends? and going back to Spain for my flight back home.

I would appreciate it, if you could responde asap.

I need to travel to Germany in the last week of April and attend business meetings in Sweden till the first week of May.

Will it be possible for me to get a Schengen business visa to Sweden while my current visa issued by Germany is still active, if I submit all the necessary documents?

the best thing for you to do is to call Swedish embassy and see if you can get a new visa for that business trip starting from the expiration of your other visa. or you can call German embassy if it’s possible to extend the duration of your stay and that you are willing to provide additional documents to prove the business trip to Sweden and a new date of your return ticket.

i can only give you my opinion and the rest is still up to the embassy or consulate. i wish you good luck on this one though. take care!

You have the Schengen C type visa and it should allow you to visit Norway and come back in the Netherlands. I don’t think your case is a matter of Schengen. I guess it’s a personal matter that you and your boyfriend have to discuss. If he wouldn’t allow you to go to Norway for some reasons (financial or time), he should be open to you about it. And you should also have an open mind as to why he doesn’t want you to go there in Norway.

Typically for a C visa, the 90 days starts upon entering the Schengen territory. and that 90 days is valid within a 180 day period.

So i don’t see any reason why you can move to other countries as long as your D visa is still in effect.

    Dear Jacy,

It is good luck to find ur blog. I am in Madrid to study Spaish. Now I have a Spaish student visa(type D) which is valid until 17th April. My concern begins this point.

    [my concern]
As you know, the students who want to study in Spain for long time have to be issued ‘Student Identification’ (Tarjeta de Estudiante) by Spanish police station. So I, as other foriegn students, asked to issue it. However, in Madrid, there are so many foreigners, the Spanish police allowed me to register to submit documents and materials for issuing at 10th JUNE. It takes tooooo long time. (I must wait for approximately 6 months even to hand in my document for getting student card, similar to residential permit since I arrive in Spain this 18th January.)

So for now, I don’t have student identification but only have a print-out of my appointment (we can print out it over Internet) which can prove that my asking for permit to study for 1 year. And I have a papers of my study plan from Jan to August issued by my Spainsh Language Center.

At this situation, after my present student visa is expired at 17th April, before I get long-term staying permit in Spain, I must go to London and Prague from 25th April to 4th May.

Each travel is on purpose of as below.

    1. Madrid -> London : In order to attend a academic conference

    2. London -> Prague : In order to have a vacation

Finally I have to be back to Madrid to study again. It is somewhat complicated situation. To speak addtionally, basically Korea has a mutual agreement of non-visa travel for 3 months with most of Europe nations.

The reason I have not yet got the permit residential here is not my fault. So if I cannot get out of Spain for over 6 months, I believe it is a nonsense.

Jacy, could you kindly recommend for me? I am very concerned about this.

Many thanks in advance. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

you can apply one month stay but it depends on visa officer whether he would give you for one month only or for three monts. it depends on your previous travel history. its better if you get three months visa because if you would get one month, then you are bound to travel within one month and if due to some reason you cant travel in one month then you have to get visa again for travelling to schengen. so i would suggest you to apply for three months visa and travel whenver you like.

Now i am wondering whether i can apply for another schengen visa to other shchengen state consulate and what implications does rejections has?……

    Hi Jacy,
You are a realy helpful and nice person.

I am Yemeni citizen and I have got a scholarship for a period of four months as visiting researcher at one university in Czech republic. The Czech embassy in Yemen issued for me a Visa type C and Multiple entry with validity
from 05-04-2009 to 09-09-2009 for 90 days. I did not know that this type of visa is a tourist visa.
Any way, i entered on 09-04-2009.
some of my papers accepted in USA conference will be hold on 13-july 2009 and another one in Czech republic will hold on 28 july 2009 and one also on Poland will hold on 16 july 2009 and i have invitation letters to attend all these conferences.
Unfortunately, my visa is going to expired. i think that it will be exbired on 08 -04-09 so that i can not attend the conferences of Czech and Poland

so that i want to extend my tourist visa as soon as possible and i have proved from the czech university that i am research student and need to extend my visa more than three months but my friend told me i can not extend my visa as student from any schengen state except from my country because it is a tourist visa. Is it true?
    the second question is :
may i extend my tourist visa more than 90 days as a new tourist visa. if the reply is not. there are around of 29 days from my visa. may i come back to my country and apply to extend visa as student or can stay some times in my country and come back again to attend the conference in Czech republic and Poland if the Czech embassy does not extend my visa to student visa or taking along time.

Finally, Do you know any information about the USA visa?

    Best regards,

    Ahmed

However my organization wants me to stay 3 more months after my current schengin visa expires. Is it possible to get the extension for short term visa or new application for another 3 months while being in france.

… i have a question… I have a Colombian passport but am a legal resident in the US. My husband is in spain doing his phd on a work visa and cannot apply for me until next year. I want to stay with him for a couple of months in spain and then come back to the states till he can apply for me. My question is, what happens if i get lets say 15 day stay period but decide to stay the full three months the visa is “valid” for without asking for an extension?.. Would i be able to apply for another visitor visa later on, if i decide i want to go back for a while before he can do the application for me? or is that considered overstaying. If so, how hard is it to get an extension once already in spain. (We are going to the world cup in south africa, leaving from spain so i really need to be safe as far as being able to reapply for a visitor’s schengen visa or a transit visa)… Thanks!!

Also at the end of his studies in December he will leave Madrid for Paris for 6 days. Then he will return to NY from Paris thru Zurich. Can he visit France or Switzerland prior to December or can he only enter each Schengen country once even if it is only in transit.

Please advise how to handle questions at the immigration at Italy. Do we tell the truth or do we have to say something like we were planning to go to Poland and then changed our mind, so here we are! you may want to check with the embassy to make sure there is no clerical error and point out that you intended to stay longer than 15 days and that you have provided documentation to support that duration. if they insist on giving you 15 days, there’s nothing we can do about it.

visa extensions are not very popular. i haven’t heard much success stories about it.

    Hi Yesha!
The same thing happened to me when I last applied for a Schengen visa. As it turns out, it was just a clerical error in their part so they issued me a letter that ammends the visa they issued. The Duration of stay on your case 5 days would mean that it is the maximum number of days you are allowed to stay in each trip. If you’re from the UK and you’re visiting France, you should go back to UK after 5 days of your stay in France. With a multiple entry visa, you can visit another Schengen country for another 5 days max stay.

    Hi Jacy,

My schengen visa stamped in my passport reads ‘Valid for ETATS Schengen’, Type-C, Number of entries-MULT and valid until 06/06/2011.

I need to travel from India to Paris in 1st week of May and then to Krakow, Poland in 2nd week of May. Can I travel with the above visa? Should I come back to India after Paris visit or can i travel straight to Poland. Please clarify.

    Thanks in advance

    @Vinay:
quick question… how many days is the Duration of Stay on your visa? if you have 30 days, then you can just stay in Paris and then go to Poland without having to go back home. however, if the duration of stay in your visa is only 7 days, that means, you have 7 days to stay in Paris. After that, you have to go back home or at least exit the Schengen Region and then go Poland and stay for 7 days.

If I apply for a visa to attend a two days conference in a schengen state, how much duration would i get the visa for?

    Reply

    Jacy

    Jacy Reply:

the duration would depend on what documentation you presented upon application.
if your application is simply to attend the 2 day conference, they will most likely give about 5 days duration.
however, if you also stated that it is also to visit and you will provide evidence that you can sustain your stay, hotel booking for more days and round-trip flight booking longer, then they will most likely give you more days.

i would suggest that you check with the Swedish embassy in UK. The last time I heard, you need to have both work & residence permit in one of the Schengen States in order for you to be able to travel freely.

you cannot renew your visa once expired.
however, you can apply for a new visa there in Pinas.
since you already have an approved Schengen visa (as long as you are using it within its means), then it should be easier for you to get a new visa.

    hi,

im an indian citizen planning on visiting the netherlands next week with my parents for two weeks. had applied to the netherlands consulate for a tourist visa with all requisite documents. however, they returned our passports but have asked for my mother’s birth certificate. im a little confused, as i am unable to understand whether this stands as a rejection or not. there is no rejection stamp on the passports. as they have asked for a birth certificate, is there a need to re apply or simply resubmit along with passports and documents? have been to the country multiple times in the past, my mother has been there too, with no hassles previously. does sending back of passports without a rejection stamp and asking for additional documents stand as a rejection? is there anything else i can do?

    Hi there,

Thanks for sharing this website and your knowledge about Schengen Visa ;)

My fiance is a NZ resident, however he still holds a South African passport, which means he’s still not a NZ citizen. We are leaving to London and Europe next month by June 15. He submitted his travel documents and passport for obtaining his British visa in Wellington, New Zealand 3 weeks ago. We are still waiting for his British visa until now, hopefully by next week it will be returned to us. As we still have to apply for his Schengen Visa to Italy Embassy in Wellington, NZ and we live in Auckland. We are running out of time as I believe that the processing time for a Schengen visa takes about 3 weeks and we only have at least 5 weeks left before we go on holiday to London/Europe.

My question is: Do you think the Italian Embassy in Wellington, NZ will speed up the processing time if my fiance would have to apply directly in person to Wellington City? and if the Italian Embassy does not accept direct application in person.. what happens if we don’t get our Schengen Visa on time? Is there any other possible way to apply for a Schengen Visa, perhaps is sit possible to apply for a Shengen Visa once we arrive in Italy? After London, we arrive in Italy for 3 days, then to Spain for 3 days and lastly to France for 3 days and then back to NZ.

Any advise on this would be appreciated. Thanks!! I look forward to your reply.

Hi there! I stumbled upon your site while trying to research more about the Schengen visa. I find your article very helpful but I hope you can still help me clarify some of my questions.

First of all, is it true that I have to apply for the Schengen visa at the first schengen country I will enter? See, I will attend a conference in Prague. This is my main purpose of applying for a Schengen visa. But, I want to arrive at Vienna first because it will be cheaper for me that way. My plan is that I’ll travel from Manila to Vienna, and then, I’ll take a bus from Vienna to Prague. I am wondering if I will have problems with the Vienna/AUSTRIAN immigration office if I do this, given that my Schengen visa was issued by the Czech embassy? Will they allow me to enter Vienna first?

In fact, I’m also looking at the option of of arriving in France first. Staying there for at least 1 day tour, and then, travel by plain to my main destination which is at Prague. Do you think that will be okay for the French immigration office? Given that my Schengen visa was issued by the Czech embassy and yet I will enter first in France?

Second, I plan to travel with another person with me. She already has a multiple entry Schengen visa which she got from the German embassy. Before, she was able to enter Germany and travel to Europe. Now, since she’s back in Manila and she wants to travel with me again, can she just easily enter Prague this time? Or, Vienna/France (or whatever shengen country we first land too, before travelling to Prague?) OR, should she still enter Germany first (given that her shengen visa was issued by the German embassy)? :(

I hope you can help me. I am very confused with this. :( (

I will really be grateful for your help!!! Truly! Thank you in advance! God bless!

    Hello jacy,

I am indian passport holder with a German student visa valid for two years. Recently my mother wanted to visit me during holidays. She applied for the visa attaching my documents as wel stating for the purpose of visit and that too a toursit visa. She got refused saying that the documents was not fully sported in which she forgot to attach her medical insurance paper. The rejection stamp is not on the passport though a refusal letter. My question to you is that i have an aquintance in austria who is willing to write a invitation letter for my mother. i am a bit curious to know that would it be feasable for my mother to apply to austrian embassy although her german visa application was refused. She is not willing to apply again in germany as the appointment date is given after one month. She needs to visit me in july and she cannot wait that longer. What can she do.. please help// she is heart broken

I am working in the UK and holds a Philippine passport with 3 years work permit. I have booked a holiday package to Greece from 22 Aug to 4 Sept. Unfortunately the soonest visa appointment in Greek embassy is 16 August which leaves me less than 15 days to be processed and puts my trip into jeopardy.

I have booked a 2 day trip to France from 11 to 12 August in the hope I can get a Schengen visa from French embassy. I set an appointment on July 13 (20 days prior to departure). I am hoping the embassy will grant me a multiple entry so I can use this to go to Greece as well.

My itinerary would be France (2 days), back to UK for a week, then Greece (2 weeks).

It did say if I get an annual travel insurance and have larger amount of money in the bank. They might issue a multiple visa. I plan to show around £1,000 worth of bank statement.

What do you think of this plan?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I have a schengen visa (single entry, valid for 10 days only) issued by the Belgium consulate in the US, for a tourist visit. I have a US Green card.

I have a round trip flight ticket from the US to Rome in two days, as I found a better deal with the airline.

Since I have the Schengen visa issued by the “Belgium consulate”, will this cause any issues for me while entering & exiting Italy? What kind of issues, if at all will I run into at the airport in Rome (Italy)? Or when travelling/visiting within Rome/Italy? I plan to leave for US at the end of the 10 day visa period. Appreciate a quick response! Thank you!

    Hello Jacy,

First of all I should thank you for your all answer. Many friends are hugely benefited by your answer.

I am little worried about my VISA. I got a PhD admission letter from Czech Republic for four years. I should apply for the visa one year then I will extend. My question is how long it will take for the VISA processing?
I call to the czech embassy. They told me it will take only ten days. but the university told me that visa processing needs at least two – three months. Which one is correct for the student visa for one year?

another question is about the eticket. University will pay my airticket. but the problem is university will book my ticket after visa and czech embassy in new delhi asking my ticket before submitting visa application. What would be the solution? is the ticket is necessary before VISA application?

If I buy travel insurance from India, the insurance companny told me that it will also work in Czech, but the university told me to buy insurance from Czech, though its eight times costly but they can give you servics cashless medical service, but Indian insurance will not. I have to pay my medical bill, after I came back I have claim my bill money back. Which one is better?

But they refused the visa saying that She might not leave the schengen area before the expiry of the visa period. They have also stamped on her passport “Visa applied for Italy for Schengen on date…”.

This time, I want to try to apply other Schengen countries, which one is the easiest to get ?

IF I apply to other Schengen counties, whether the above stamp on the passport will create any difficulty.?? Do they check through the consulate the history of rejection ??

Could you please answer me ??

    Hi Jacy,
must say of all the travel advises on visa that i have heard, yours is one of the most sound and logical ones.
    Good work!

I have an Indian passport, UK visa and had applied to Dutch embassy for schengen visa through a travel agency ‘Flight Shop’.
The travel agent screwed things wherever he possibly could, after i had submitted perfectly in order supporting docs.
Within 3 days of rejection of my schengen applications, i have applied again at the Dutch embassy, this time by myself.

I am pretty confident that unless people are incapable of moving/shady travelers, they should do the application themselves and the results will not be frustrating.

My UK visa was a breeze as i did it personally.
All one requires is sound guidelines and logical representation of facts/documents.

I will recommend you blog to all those who seek my advice.

    cheerios!

This link below shows my application status:

I consulted a few more sites and according to them, it generally takes 15 days to 1 month for the processing.
Since my classes begin from the 23rd of Sept., I’ve really started to worry. Could you tell me what is the probable cause for the delay? And how long does it generally take for an application to be processed?

I have not done my flight bookings – but I am getting flights with 6 hours of stopover at Amsterdam on way to Lisbon.

I intend to extend my 6 hour stop over to a day by postpoing my flight from Amsterdam to Lisbon. Is it possible? Or my first point of entry has to be Lisbon?

    regards,
